Migraine
Migraine is an often debilitating neurological syndrome characterized by altered visual perceptions, severe headaches, nausea and insensitivity to light and noise.
A typical migraine headache is unilateral ( one sided ) and pulsating, lasting from 4 to 72 hours. Approximately 70% of adult sufferers are female, whereas there are equal numbers of sufferers among boys and girls under 12. Approximately 25% of women and 10% of men experience a migraine at least once a year. Migrains may be as frequent as several each week.
Migraine headaches can be broken down into four phases. While these phases are common, they are not necessarily experienced by all sufferers. The four phases are:
- The Prodrome - occuring hours or days before the headache
- The Aura - immediately preceding the headache
- The Headache - lasting 4 to 72 hours
- The Postdrome - usually lasting several hours
