Positional Release Technique

Positional Release Technique is a collective term to describe therapies that place muscles and joints into comfortable positions that help relieve pain and muscle spasm. This position usually involves shortening or tight muscles. These therapies are very gentle and can lead to an immediate reduction in pain.

It is believed that Positional Release Technique works by resetting faulty protection mechanisms within the body. If you were out walking on a rainy day, and one foot started to slip from under you, your nervous system would detect a sudden and unexpected movement and trigger muscles to contract to try and stop you from falling over. This reflex action is a natural way for the body to protect itself when it determines that it is in risk of injury.

Sometimes, due to injury, poor posture, illness or other unidentified reasons, our nervous system sends this message to contract when there is no danger of injury. In some cases, this leads to chronic tension, while in others, it leads shortened muscles and greater chance of injury when playing sport.

Positional release Technique places muscles and joints into positions of ease, where the message for contraction is no longer sent. After a short period of time, contraction stops and the joint or muscle is moved back into a neutral position. This often resets the muscle and joint to stop sending messages to the muscles to contract. When this happens, long lasting pain relief results.
